This afternoon I confirmed that the purplish black of the turtle beans was sensitive to pH. If the kitchen soap is drawn across a puddle of bean liquid left on the stovetop after a bout of soupmaking, the inky stuff goes suddenly teal. It is very striking.

I know exactly who would most appreciate hearing of my discovery---just her thing, really exactly her kind of thing---but I also know that I could turn the house upside down and still not find her address.
